It manipulates an already existing waveform and splits the differences in pitch into segments that can be adjusted. One of benefits that I see with this software, for example, is recording the best take of a long passage but being 1 fret off from a specific note. Instead of doing the whole thing over again, you can just adjust that single note and save a lot of time in the studio. I think this is way better than sacrificing the whole part due to time constraints. You can't record nonsense and expect to craft a masterpiece using this app to manipulate it.
no, you can record nonsense and make it sound beautiful
theres automatic tempo and pitch correction. You can record a series of the same note and change the pitch of some notes then make a melody out of that. Same with a chord, record the same chord being played over and over then change em around a little bit and you can have different chords. But with all that said it takes talent to make something sound good and unique, no matter how you get there.
You can do that, but then it's no different than a MIDI sequencer in that regard. 'Beautiful' is subjective and the tonality/timbre of how each note/chord is played on guitar isn't affected by tempo and pitch so it will still require guitarists to have an ear for graceful, accurate playing.
EDIT: My whole point is that this is just another tool to help in the scrubbing/polishing process of recording and that it's not necessarily going to change the face of music, only facilitate in the musician's vision coming across as intended. I'm all for it!

This.
I agree with the points that if someone makes it, they better be able to play it live, but think how much monotonous re-recording will be cut down do to tiny little errors. A cut down on studio time cuts down costs and more time can be spent on more important things.

Sounds like you play the guitar for the wrong reasons
Exactly. No offense Nero, but people who like technical music simply because it's difficult to play annoy the hell out of me. It legitimized the voice of people who dislike metal and its various subgenres because they say that "It's just noise that lacks emotion and is only being made because it's challenging". I listen to tech music because I can find profound emotional content within it, just like with all other genres, not because "holy fuck, the drummer just played a 15/32 double bass groove while keeping the 7/8 feel the rest of the band is playing".
If you're wanking on your instrument purely to say "hey, look what I can do" instead of making an actual musical statement, you're an elitist douche* that has no business in the world of art. Perhaps you should take up weight lifting.
*Elite in terms of technical ability, not compositional talent. "Elitist" is often thrown around as an insult but I think in most contexts we should strive to be the best, making it nonsensical.
To get back on topic, I'm really excited that something like this exists. I will continue to work on my drumming (And possibly work to get my talents on other instruments up to a "technical" level before I die) simply because I love to play and I would like to perform with live bands every now and then, but there is a lot of music that I would love to compose but that would be pointless without my ability to perform everything at the level I would need to. I'm also too shy and considerate (Ironic after my prior comments, I suppose) to go find accomplished musicians and then force them to play exactly what I want.
This is a great advancement in the audio arts.

Gaaah, where are you fucking extrapolating all this from? It's like you people have some compulsion to call me out on these make believe things. I've been playing guitar and writing music for years. I've poured my heart and soul into nearly three albums worth of music. You have absolutely no grounds for accusing me of being an elitist douche. The guitar has served for me as a great catharsis through many turbulent times and I've spent an enormous amount of time trying to be the best I can be in order to produce the music I want to hear that I can't procure from anywhere else. There's no crime in that is there? I swear, you guys can be so fucking insulting sometimes. So back the fuck off.

The bolded sentence in the initially quoted texted. Since this program doesn't give anyone any additional ability to compose, one can infer that you were talking about the technical proficiency you've built up over the years. The rest follows from that.
Of course, I should also point out that I wasn't actually directing all of that at you but at people who do think technical music is good simply because it's technical. It was late when I wrote that and reading it back it looks a bit more caustic than I had intended.
I'd ask you to clarify what you meant but I think we're getting off topic and not for anything constructive.

Alright, I'll just finish this digression by saying that I don't really care about impressing people with any guitar skills I've attained. I would just feel that all my personal achievements would mean nothing if guitar as an instrument became something as easily manipulable as Melodyne could make it. I'd feel like "Shit, why did I bother learning all this shit if it's that easy?" I suppose I shouldn't really care though... I guess I'm just getting annoyed and irrational because I know that if this program becomes the next pro-tools, there's going to be a shitstorm of dishonest, hyper-contrived bands, on an even higher scale than nowadays.
