Those of us who have entered the third or fourth decade of our earth-bound existence will remember a time when music videos were practically enigmatic. Throughout the 1980s, the record industry depended heavily on these truncated song clips and accompanying visuals as a means of direct advertising. Music videos were essentially glorified TV commercials, as they were designed for quick and easy consumption. Additionally, time slots and consumer demographics were crucial factors in determining when and where they would be shown. Bands and musicians tended to rise or fall based their (or their label's) ability to reach a target audience, and music video networks had come to parallel FM radio stations in their effectiveness as promotional tools.

The medium has experienced a significant decline since the turn of the century, but its heyday saw bands of nearly every stripe lip-synching and churning out mock performances in front of the camera. Progressive metal was no exception, as bands from every corner of its diverse melting pot turned in videos for public consideration. In hindsight (and with the exception of Queensryche and Galactic Cowboys, both of whom had major distribution), it seems odd that their associated labels would turn to the same promotional tactics employed by the corporate suits. The effect was exactly what one might expect, as most of the videos featured here were sought out by fans and ignored by the masses. But their direction and presentation show a certain enthusiasm that can only be construed as hope; as if filming a video was the next step toward bigger things.
