BATTLES FTW

I kinda agree with the guy above me on the Talking Heads being similar. Get any of their later albums, but especially Remain In Light. It's got the same sort of layered rhythms and the same fusion of electronic and organic that Battles do so well. Thing is, I think Battles are largely out on their own when it comes to their aesthetic. I mean I see where people are coming from when they say that Animal Collective do a similar thing, but with AC, it seems much more shallow.

The only actual musical precedent to Battles I could reccommend right off, would be American Don by Don Caballero, and to a lesser extent What Burns Never Returns by the same. They have the same semi-sterile feel, with lots of delayed/tapped guitars. In fact Ian Williams, guitarist of battles was originally in Don Cab and I think that Mirrored is a direct advancements of the techniques used on American Don.
I actually prefer American Don as it feels much more streamlined. There's also this sort of austerity and seriousness in American Don that I love. Isn't present at all in Battle's music. Battles are too much fun.

One of my major gripes with Battles is that, while a huge amount of thought goes into all the layers, quite a lot of the time it can just be overwhelming. Still awesome though.
Whoops now I'm waffling. fuckit

Re:Battles : Mirrored 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
thanks for the headsup bwa.

but to mr lizz:

i know i didnt elaborate alot on what i was looking for. Something more along the lines of Animal Collective/ Battles-type shit. I just love the organic drums with the wicked electronics. Dont get me wrong american don is a fav of mine. but to me their (battles) mix of that style with the electronics is what sets them apart from animal collective imo. AC is one of my top bands for sitting back and blazing with a fewa the ladies but thats what i mean, i want the crazy acid trip rhythms and odd trachea training. I just love how they use their voices more like instruments than using them mostly lyrically. American Don has the same effects essentially, but i want the aesthetics, i want to jump out of my socks because of some random sound that adds up in the end.

bwa, tanks i'll checkm out.

Maybe i should've said, "more bands like this & Animal Collective" (:
