What does the name Cloacal Kiss mean and why did you choose it and who did your logo?

Cloacal Kiss scientific slang for "birds having sex" our ex-guitarist stumbled across the term while he was in class & promptly emailed it to all of us. As for the logo....that's something I came up with.

Cloacal Kiss seem very mysterious to me and a lot of people. Little information can be found on you guys. (Especially with no official website launched yet) Could you give a history or small bio of how the band came about?

Well, in the summer of 2005 I moved from New York to North Carolina after my band split. Nick and Darian were playing in a group called "Killing Vanity" at the time. That group was rounded out by another guitar player named Shayaan & a singer. They used a drum machine. I knew I wanted to be in a band again, but I didn't know anyone, so I took to the internet. Killing Vanity had just parted ways with there singer so I emailed them. After joining, we changed the name to Cloacal Kiss. We played our first show that November, recorded Easter shortly after that, and toured this past summer. Since then, we've parted ways with Shayaan, moved Nick to guitar along with Darian, and we now have a drummer! His name is Nija.

What's even harder to find information, is the bio and history of The Sawtooth Grin. I'm sure your sick of the Sawtooth Grin affiliation but everyone is very curious.

The Sawtooth Grin started in 1999, ended in 2004, we released one seven song album called Cuddlemonster in 2001 and broke up before releasing the Pervavor EP. The band is way more popular now than it was when it was around. Way more popular.

What other bands have the members Cloacal Kiss been in?

I was in Sawtooth, Nick was in a Boston band called Virulence (witch you should check out, post-Haste), both he and Darian were in Killing Vanity, and Darian was in a band called Throatstab. As for Nija, he was in a band called Focus the Spy.

What's the story behind your drummer situation? It seemed like Cloacal Kiss was well put without a drummerto the point of recording an album without one. Is it just not the same playing live?

Well....we had always said that we we're not going to actively look for a drummer, but if one were to come along that could hang, he could take a shot. For the most part we were happy with the drum machine. But when you're playing a lot of shows under different circumstanced, one night in a club with a sound guy, the next in a basement with a Radioshack PA, you realize that unless your going to invest in a bad ass sound rig just for your drum machine, its sound quality is totally out of your hands. That, plus a real drummer opens up a lot more possibilities as far as writing new material goes.

Who writes most of the guitar duties Shayaan or Darian? How do their styles differ, how are they similar?

As far as Easter goes, Darian wrote ALL of the guitar parts and ALL of the drum parts, Nick wrote ALL of the bass parts, and I wrote ALL of the lyrics & vocal patterns. As for whatever happens next, Darian & Nick are two completely different types of guitar player, but they compliment each other perfectly.

The new album sounds amazing. Describe your music to someone that has never heard you before or your extreme vocal style.

I just tell them they probably won't like it.

If you were forced to put Cloacal Kiss in a genre, what would it be? And who are your influences to play the music that you do?

Metal. As far as influences go, I think we try to stay away from that mentality. We just write what we don't hear but want to.

How do you sing so high pitched without throwing your voice out or damaging your throat?

10 years of screaming in bands. At this point, that's just how I sound.

Do you sing all the vocals on the Cloacal Kiss' album? Is it you that throws in the brutal death metal growls?

I do all of the vocals

What is the concept behind Easter? Easter was the day of resurrection of Christ. Is that what it's in relation too or is it a rabbit and chicken eggs theme?

Four words - zombie, deer headed Jesus. Past that, I can't comment. I'd rather be the band that people like because we're good, not because they agree with what we have to say. Because believe me.....we're not saying much.

What kind of music scene is there in North Carolina? Personally I haven't heard of much besides Cloacal Kiss and Between the Buried and Me coming out of NC.

I'm not sure, there are cool bands that we've played with that are local, but its slim pickings for sure.

Any plans to do an extensive tour any time soon?

Keep your eyes & ears open.
