Animosity's previous record, 'Empires,' has a devoted following among the deathcore circuit, and two tracks that were posted to Animosity's MySpace page promoting this record were very promising. When the promo came in, the vivid art caught my attention. Having no previous experience with this band, I was eager to give this album a listen. I was let down.

I have no problem with deathcore at all. Most of the time, the technical and songwriting chops are very solid and I tend to have a bit of fun with it all Every once in a while, the songs get either too silly because of the machismo or just end up getting too monotonous. The latter is the case with 'Animal.'

I wanted to like this record so much, because the songs "Terrorstorm" and "Tooth Grinder," the preview tracks, are so good. There are lots of riff changes and the whole thing remains complicated and catchy all at once. However, the remainder of the 28-minute album is unbelievably stagnant in comparison. The riffs are predictable and rather generic, and the enjoyable, croaky vocals just kind of dissolve with the music. Nothing particularly stands out past the first two tracks.

The remainder of the album has a basic swing that doesn't really do much other than segue death metal fills or thrashy leads. It's clear that everyone in the band is technical. Guitars are tight and so is the drumming; vocals have some neat, if generic patterns. The composition of the thing is the problem and not the players. If the first two tracks weren't on the album to begin with, I feel a higher score would have sufficed. The immense quality of those two cheapens the rest of the tracks.

I feel that the band is still having growing pains. If the first two tracks are any kind of indication, this band's next effort should be a pretty mighty one. They tried hard to create some cool, snakey deathcore, but the same imagination didn't come across on the rest of the album. It's a real shame, because this act shows some signs of real talent in a stale genre.
