Brain Drill, from CA, plays technical brutal death that doesn't fuck around with a meathead persona. The unfair, but accurate, way to describe this band is Spawn Of Possession meets Beneath The Massacre without the breakdowns. Melodies are catchy in typical death metal style, playing technically proficient and brutality is high. What startled me in the beginning was the inhuman drumming. Is it a drum machine or is it Lord Marco? I have never heard gravity blasts this intense. Of course, his signature double kick skill is present. The guitarist, Dylan, knows how to shred pretty hard. He seems to love those sweeps and runs. Vocalist Steve has lots of range and he's good at it all, from shrieks to death. He occasionally reminds me of Randy Blythe from Lamb Of God (in a good way, of course). As it stands, he has a mid-range growl, raspier and not guttural.

The band's sound tends to point more toward European death styles, such as Swedish and Polish, because of the ear for melodic death metal playing and the relentless brutality of acts such as Behemoth and Aeon. The most telling Brain Drill track would be "Forcefed Human Shit." It runs a minute and a half and has all the characteristics of a Brain Drill song: shrieking vocals ("Forcefed Human Shhheeeee-yyyyyyuuuuuut!"), gravity blasts aplenty and tight tempo changes. It tends to get close to grindcore as far as speed and approach goes. Lyrics are typical gore-soaked stuff but they tend to get political and socially conscious on tracks like "Swine Slaughter" and "The Parasites." A down side is that I can't hear the bass all that well. It's present in the mix, but it's not very dynamic. Guitar and vocals are at the forefront.

The cover is pretty cartoony in an EC Comics kind of way; it's also a little over the top, even for this band and their over-the-top music. At nineteen minutes, painfully short of full-length, you can't go wrong with this exciting debut release. As they are now writing a full-length for Metal Blade, we can expect great things from this nasty band whose name will undoubtedly grow to become mighty.
