Having never heard this death grind band before I popped in this release, my expectations were high. After halfway through this record, I was beginning to feel let down a bit and here's why. I don't mind introductory tracks that much, but when you're a grind band, time is important. Records are usually short enough. CODC features not only an introductory track but also three other sample-heavy tracks to pad out the short running time. This makes 'Zero Comfort Margin' the most filler-heavy Circle album. We only get about eighteen minutes of music here. We could have had at least two more songs! Then, the final song is a relieving 3:50 but most of it is doomy sludge, which can play either way depending on what mood you're in. The lyrics are your standard "fuck the system" stuff but they're decent enough for what they are.

The music is technically impressive but not overwhelmingly groundbreaking. Yes, it's brutal, it's fast, it's savage, but it's also very standard. It's even more hardcore than the utterly sick goregrind of the previous release, 'Human Harvest.' The songs are over before they get going more often than not. I give the band props for having the energy and brutality to keep my interest the whole way, but this band has done better. Good music, but it does feel a bit half-baked.

I'm coming across as a hardass, but I do dig this band. The tracks "Chemical Goat," "Strip Naked For The Killer," and "A Homage For Tombstone Granite" feature some really killer vocals, which are the highlight for this band. Fans of the earlier stuff may be let down; grind and hardcore fans will dig this. I'll stick with 'Human Harvest' for my Circle fix. I may visit this record again down the road. I may not. If CODC decides to go with the dissonant, chaotic hardcore/sludge/grind movement but put their own spin on it, heads will turn. They do seem to be heading in that direction; change is good.
