"The Living Doorway," the crushing opening track from Decrepit Birth's sophomore effort Diminishing Between Worlds, firmly sets the tone for the album's 45 minute runtime, immediately letting listeners know exactly what to expect from the tech-death maestros. If you've already familiarized yourself with the blasting, obtuse world of technical death metal, then you probably won't find anything entirely fresh in Decrepit Birth's sound (fitting, considering that freshness is hardly the first word a name like Decrepit Birth brings to mind); what you will find, however, is an excellently produced and executed chunk of progged-out death, and one that is sure to appease aficionados of the genre.

Metronomic, hyper-speed drumming, blazing guitar wizardry, and death's trademark vocal bludgeoning: Diminishing Between Worlds has got them all, and the album's instrumentation alone shows the formidable prowess of Decrepit Birth's players. K.C. Howard's percussive arsenal is employed to the fullest extent, with near constant rhythmic shifts and groove taking the focus over mere blasting. Guitar and bass, both provided in recording by Matt Sotelo, also show impressive versatility, balancing between extreme riffing and jazzy leads. Bill Robinson's vocal delivery provides practically nothing in the way of innovation, but rather maintains a constant, genre-approved growl throughout; still, the album's chaotic elements fuse together in perfect form, and the airtight production captures every slicing note without sacrificing Decrepit Birth's blunt emotional force.

The group does manage to drop a few surprise ingredients into the brew; the spacious instrumental "The Enigmatic Form" stands as one of the album's most memorable tracks, while "The Morpheus Oracle", an unnecessary synth-laden outro, can't help but feel tacked on. Ultimately, your appreciation for Diminishing Between Worlds is going to rely on your appreciation for technical death metal; while the album won't do much in the way of gathering new disciples, previous converts should be more than pleased in Decrepit Birth's whirling assault.
